How to Thank Someone When They Give a Monetary Gift

We've all been there, we want to thank someone for the money that they gave you for your special occasion, but we just don't know how to write it on paper.  Here are a few tips to writing a thank you card when someone gives you money:

• Don't directly state the word "money."  Refer to it as kindness or generosity.  Here are two examples: "Thank you very much for your generosity" or "Your kindness is much appreciated."
• Don't mention the amount of money.  The gift-giver knows how much he or she gave you!  Mentioning the amount of money is not considered proper etiquette.  
• State what you plan to do with the money.  If the money is a wedding gift, you may plan to put the money towards your house or something valuable to you.  If the money is for graduation, you may plan to use the money for your college textbooks.  Including these types of statements helps the gift-giver see that his or her gift is going towards something useful.

Wedding

Dear John,

Thank you so much for your generous gift for our wedding.  Because of your gift, our dream of owning a home is one step closer.  We are so glad you were able to join us on our special day.  Your kindness is much appreciated!
